Now Known As

This month I am dressing up for October. I am now wearing a new name -- Russell. That is right, I got married in September! It was a very special, and very busy time, preparing for a wedding. Steve and I learned a lot about ourselves and our strengths as a team, and now we have discovered a new level of appreciation for each other. Planning a wedding is a lot of effort and a lot of work, but it was a very rewarding experience! Steve and I both hope, and expect, to have many long years of rewarding experiences ahead of us together.

I've also been dressing myself up in some pretty awesome awards lately, too. The Artist's Magazine selected two of my works for awards in their Annual Art Competition. I am excited to see my work reproduced in this great magazine, and I was very surprised to see they also selected it for the Table of Contents page! The Society of Animal Artists has awarded my piece, Life at the Bottom, with the Newcomer Award for a first time participant in their exhibition, Art and the Animal, and also selected my piece for the national tour. Steve and I attended the early October opening at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell, New Jersey, rolling the exhibition opening into our honeymoon. -- Oradell is just outside New York City, in a much quieter area with a New England feel. It has been very surreal watching the juxtaposed images of superstorm Sandy on TV, while a screensaver with honeymoon photos of pre-hurricane New York plays on my laptop. My friends on the east coast are in my thoughts.

The octopus coils and rolls with the boiling ocean currents.

The spiral paper, with its repeating ammonite-like pattern inspired me to pay tribute to a fascinating group of invertebrates known as cephalopods. Cephalopods are intelligent, resourceful, personable, and biologically fascinating. With no bones, the octopus can squeeze through tiny holes. They change skin texture and color in an instant, and are known for their curiosity and resourcefulness. Octopuses, cuttlefish, and squid are closely related, and the nautilus is their cousin. Ammonites, the ancient fossils, are more related to the squid and the octopus than they are to the nautilus. Their relationship can be seen in their fossilized mouth parts.

There is one more piece planned in this series.
