Almost Magic...

"Almost magic..." That was one of my favorite comments I've received about my work. There really is something almost magic about paper and ways artists can take this humble, everyday material and push it beyond our expectations. Last month I acted as guest co-host on a special webcast with Annette Coleman themed The Art of Paper. It gave me an excuse (I should have been working in the studio, really) to delve into researching the many artistic uses of the media, stepping into a large world of paper artwork that spans time, technique, style, scale, and culture. Scroll down for a basic introduction to a few of the forms of traditional paper artwork, and links to some of my favorite blogs about current artists pushing this material.

Paper. We are so familiar with it. We read the news on it (at least we used to,) we print on it, put our groceries in it, toss it out by the pound as it fills our mailboxes. Most artists take a little more interest in the material, paying attention to paper as sketchbooks, substrates, and for reproductions. But all of us remember using paper as it's own material in the early memories of our lives. What child in America has not cut colored shapes from bright construction paper, glued strips of newspaper to balloons, and cut folded snowflakes? Paper is so much a part of our learning and living experience as modern humans it is easy to take for granted. Paper can be torn, cut, shaped, molded, folded, painted, combined with other materials, built up or deconstructed. Paper brings to mind thoughts of delicacy, etherealness, and impermanence, yet we have examples of paper that are over 2000 years old- dated from 100 BC in China, placing it close to the historical origins of papermaking in date and time. Paper is a heavy, strong material and is used not only by engineering students in mock-ups and tests, but as an industrial material as well - perhaps the most surprising use being World War II airplane fuel tanks made from plastic-infused paper.

Cut Paper Sculpture/Three Dimensional Collage

This is my own term for my media, and the most descriptive one that I've discovered to explain my work quickly and clearly. 'Paper sculpture' without the cut aspect includes many techniques, from cast, to origami, and many others. The history of my chosen medium have remained elusive to me, however, there are quite a few current artists and illustrators using this technique today. Paper Sculpture: A Step-by-Step Guide by Kathleen Ziegler, and the work of Leo Monahan helped to introduce me to the technique.

Paper Cutting

Paper cutting has originated or been adapted by many cultures around the world.
Jianzhi - China

Wycinanki/Vytynanky - Poland
Scherenschnitte - Germany
Papel picado - Mexico
Jewish paper cutting originated when the ink of a rabbi froze... so he cut the words instead.
Silhouettes became popular in Europe and America in the 18th century.

Kirigami, Pop-ups and Paper Engineering

The art and science of cutting and folding movable paper.

Origami

The Japanese art of paper folding, origami is one of the most widely recognized technique of creating art out of paper.
Wet folding can create intricate and highly detailed, realistic designs.

Modular origami combined many folded units of the same type into large geometric displays.
Zhezhi is the Chinese form of paper folding and may predate origami.

Cast Paper

Forming loose wet paper fibers into a mold to create bas-relief sculpture.

Mache

Pulp or strips of paper combined with an adhesive to create sculptural forms.

Quilling

Strips of colored paper are rolled and shaped and displayed on their edges in intricate designs. Began during the Renaissance as nuns and monks trimmed gilt edges from books, and rolled them on their quills. This artform has seen a resurgence in popularity.

Decoupage and Collage

From the French word for glue (the term was originally used by Picasso,) a collage is simply a combination of elements into one unique form. Most of us have created collages at some point in our lives, and collage is a popular fine art medium that is open ended in style and materials used.
Decoupage is the traditional folk-art form used since the 18th century. One of the goals of traditional decoupage is a smooth, thick varnished surface that makes the artpiece resemble inlay work.

Papertole

Originating as a three-dimensional decoupage, this craftform uses a technique of combining multiple prints or cards of the same images and layering the repeating image three-dimensionally.

Book Arts

Many artists today are looking at books as both an artform, creating unique handmade books from scratch, and also as an art material, reclaiming old books to turn them into new works of art.
