New Year's Roundup

See what I did there? The theme of this first newsletter of 2017 is the West, and I've got some great exhibitions of Western Art coming up, including the Coors Western Club Art Show this week at the National Western Stock Show, continuing through January.
The Coors show is one of the top premier exhibitions in the genre. I've been in studio all summer creating new pieces for it. I've also been following the show ever since my ushering job at the Denver Coliseum/NWSS Complex in my young-artist-fresh-from-college days. That's six months and fifteen years of a show close to my heart!
My work will be in the Club part of the show, so if you visit during regular Stock Show hours, ask to see it by name, as it will be in a different location. If you plan on attending the opening events, contact me about tickets for the Red Carpet Reception; I can share them with you at a discount.

2017 will be a great year!
Another new show for me will be the Western Spirit Art Show at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. Both Focus on Nature at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and the national tour of the Society of Animal Artists continue on through the new year.
And workshops! I know you've been asking for them. I've been working with the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators to provide you with several opportunities to join me to learn how to create magic in paper.

No New Year's newsletter would be complete without a 2016 recap... for me, last year was a big year for travel. Traveling is one of my passions but only too rarely becomes a reality, so 2016 was truly a special year. A trip to New Mexico for family, two weeks in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, a workshop in Texas hill country, and back to Texas a second time to the Gulf coast area.
Except for the international flight, all my travels last year were road trips. I love flying and soaring over the clouds, but there is something awe-inspiring by the slow transportation of a road trip. You experience the change in the lay of the land, the climates, cultures, vegetation and geology as the miles roll by.
America is a big, big, place. So is Texas, and surprising for a first time visitor. Hill country reminded me more of the Caribbean rainforest than it did of dry Colorado or any stereotyped Texas image I had in my head. I realized quite suddenly that I was south of the Mexican Border in latitude, and very near the tropics.
Steve and I took the camper trailer through whole different regions on our road trip to Houston for the opening weekend of Art and the Animal at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Caprock Canyons State Park was an unplanned and serendipitous stop that is home of the official Texas state bison herd. (At the time I had just started the sketching and drawing stage of We Can Move Mountains.) Then off to Galveston State Park for beach camping. Great times with good artist friends, family visits and boat rides, and a return trip through Oklahoma and Kansas that took us through two additional natural history museums! Oh, and Kansas is NOT flat.

Cheers and here's to new journeys, close to home and otherwise!

We Can Move Mountains

34" x 17"
$5800

This piece I created specifically for the Coors Western Art Exhibit and the Young Guns Society, a group of new art collectors under the age of 40. These wolves embody the spirit of the young artists and collectors who are just starting to approach the art world -- an established, imposing system.

We Can Move Mountains - Wolf detail
Two young wolves approach what seems like an impossible task... This is not their first hunt, but perhaps it is their first time handling such an important role on their own. Tensions run high, but they must find their confidence to realize their own power...
We Can Move Mountains - Bison detail 2

...and the mountains slowly begin to move.

Wolf Repose

22" x 20"

My room was decked out in wolves all through middle school and high school. I loved returning to them with this piece.

Couple's Dance

A dance is a partnership. Each partner brings their own moves, and plays off the other's beat.

Nature in Paper - Cut Paper Sculpture Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration

Paper is more than a substrate; it can be a beautiful, eye-catching media of its own. Discover possibilities in this versatile media that can create looks from bold graphic styles to lifelike effects that are mistaken for the real thing. Combine collage, cutting and sculpting techniques to take your art into the third dimension while exploring a new palette of textures and colors found in handmade papers from around the world. Create your own cut paper sculpture as we cover tips for layering, scoring, shaping forms, choosing papers and building supporting structures. We’ll finish with a discussion of care and presentation of the finished sculpture.

Cap Rock Bison photo
Bison Sketch - Cap Rock State Park

Sketching bison at Caprock Canyons State Park in Texas during our road trip to Houston for the Society of Animal Artists opening weekend. This big bull looked so content as he chowed down the buffalo grass, scratched 'that spot' on nearby bushes, and lazed in the sun, flicking flies. He payed us no mind at all, and we stayed in the car sketching him for quite a while.
