Through Internet Fog
I admit that I'm not the best at sending these out like clockwork (oh, you may have noticed!) I want to thank you guys for sharing this journey with me. As welcome into my world as I would like to make you feel, sometimes my own little human idiosyncrasies get in the way. It's a lot easier to write a series of quick ongoing posts on social media over a formal, formatted newsletter. The best up-to-date news (as well as other behind-the-scenes goodies) can be found on my Facebook page and Instagram account. Links are at the bottom, and I'd like to invite you to friend me personally for the best insider view into my studio. It means a lot when a friendly face approaches me at a show to say how much they enjoy following the newsletters and Facebook posts. How anything actually gets through the flood of social media and its gatekeeper algorithm surprises me! Putting yourself out there on the internet can feel like trying to navigating a ship through a thick fog: you have no idea how far or fast you're traveling, except for the short glimpses of landmarks that let you know that your compass is indeed calibrated on the right mark. Your comments are those moments for me. Thank you. |

Even in the tropics some of the best beauty can be found in the small and the inconspicuous. These purple flowers bloom for only a day at time, traveling upward on long flower spikes. The plant is commonly known as porterweed for the foamy medicinal tea created from its leaves. In Trinidad and Tobago it is called purple vervine, and is never seen without hummingbird and butterfly visitors. This delicate brown creature is a longtailed skipper, and is actually a butterfly, not a moth. The simple barred pattern and subtle shift of colors within the browns create their own shimmering, modest beauty. The sculpture is created at over twice life size. |

Art for the Sangres showcases remarkable art for a vital cause – helping to protect land, water and wildlife while there is still time. The fine art show and reception is San Isabel Land Protect Trust’s largest fundraiser. The land trust has protected more than 40,000 acres of working ranches, agricultural and forest lands, water resources, wildlife habitat and scenic open spaces throughout southern Colorado. |

Many of you may know of my passion for paleontology. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science hosted a traveling dinosaur exhibit featuring dinosaurs from the southern hemisphere. North American dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops are common to see in most museums. They are readily available as either specimens or casts, and hey, who doesn't love local pride? So seeing an entire exhibit full of southern animals is a very rare opportunity, and I spent a lot of quality time studying and sketching. Say hello to Buitreraptor, a small, dog-sized raptor from Argentina in the Unenlagiinae subfamily. Look at that long snout and those predatory, forward eyes! This elegant little hunter reminds me of a heron. |
