How to Eat an Elephant |
I have several tickets available for Sculpture in the Park this weekend. First come, first served. Contact me if you're interested and let me know how many you'd like. You can also find me at the Summer Art Market later this month. The majority of this year has been spent moving. A series of injuries has put the brakes on us a few times (toe and elbow for me, ongoing knee and hand issues for Steve). But who knew the process would take so long? Our house has felt like an overstuffed coil, slowly unwinding and revealing more of itself the further in you go. Packing and unpacking boxes in alternate. A little bit in this room, a little bit in that room, then a little bit more. Sometimes finding treasures we've been looking for for years. Clearing out things in order to reach other things -- like those very necessary pieces of storage furniture. Prepping spaces in the new house for things to go into. Steve akins it to a sliding puzzle. I finally got the new studio unpacked and organized last week. Strangely, it was one of the last things to move. One of the big upgrades is moving a large paper storage unit, that was in our den being used for matboard, into the active studio, where it will house my handmade paper selection. I also have separate areas for oil painting and drawing projects, I won't have to trip over myself in my own space anymore. It's so nice to have a dedicated place to create in again! Although lack of an 'official' studio has limited some of my art practices, it can't stop me completely. Sketchbooks are both my first go-to and my last resort, the pillar and foundation of art creation. Thankfully, they're portable.

Works in Progress |
I have a new crop of Essence drawings set aside to become sculpted and detailed. They will be ready and available this weekend at Sculpture in the Park. Although I never plot out the course of these timed gesture drawings, when I get to the sculpting stage I get to orchestrate the composition, choosing which hide-and-seek sketches to emphasize. |

A family of wrens lived in our chimney; we'd hear them begging for food whenever we sat by the fireplace. This little one fell into our basement and was peeping from across the room. We found her in the afternoon on the Fourth of July, and got her to take some water and few rehydrated mealworms from our bird feeder. |

We took this little fledgling outside, hoping that the calls would attract the parents, while we kept a watchful eye on the circling jays. Alas, there were no signs of the parents and night was falling. I'm not sure I made the right decision bringing her in; I tried to give her a warm safe place, but the little wren hadn't eaten much and didn't make it through the night. It was strange drawing this still body whose life and warmth I had felt in my hands only the night before. A beautiful creature that I tried to do as much honor as I could. |
